Melidoni Cave

Melidoni Cave

The cave of Melidoni is one of the largest caves in Europe, you find yourself in the melon of Mylopotamos province.
In October 1823, 370 women and children and 30 armed men had fled to the Gerontospilios cave near the village of Melidoni in the province of Mylopotamos (in today's prefecture of Rethymnon). There they successfully defended, for 3 months, the attacks and bombings of the Turks. Eventually, in January 1824, Hussein Bey's army set fire and smoke asphyxiating all those who were shut down in the cave.
